During the conference, all children with Down Syndrome under the age of 21 (and interested siblings) attend a carnival with a personal Princeton University student volunteer. The carnival hosts a variety of activities including a scavenger hunt, sports, interactive stories and games, and other stations run by Princeton student groups. Volunteer to child ratios are usually one-to-one. All volunteers are trained and receive individual information on their specific child. There is also a nursery for all children under the age of 2.

While the children are attending the carnival, their parents are invited to hear speakers who are experts in different aspects of Down Syndrome. This year, some of the topics to be discussed include: teachers using inclusion strategies, technology, social opportunities for children with Down Syndrome, and Early Intervention. In addition, there will be an exhibit hall with various organizations that provide resources and support for families of children with Down Syndrome. Suggestions for speakers and exhibitors are more than welcome!

Complimentary brunch is provided for all attendees.

Research Study Opportunities For Ages 7 – 30 http://jsdsa.org/research-study-opportunities-for-ages-7-30/ http://jsdsa.org/research-study-opportunities-for-ages-7-30/#comments Thu, 22 Mar 2012 11:00:57 +0000 JSDSA http://jsdsa.org/?p=259 Here is information from the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore regarding 3 research studies for people with Down syndrome:

For children aged 7-17 years “Genetic Influences on learning and behavior in individuals with Down syndrome”. The study will involve 90-120 minutes of testing in one or two visits. Most tests will be done on a computer. A small blood sample will be taken and parents will complete two short questionnaires on medical history and behavior. Contact Kay Taylor at taylork@kennedykrieger.org 443-923-9143.

For children aged 10-17. Study will test the drug rivastigmine to see if it will help improve memory, speech and language function. This is a double blind study which means that some people will get the drug and some will not…but you will not know which group you are in. Four 2 to 6 hour visits to Baltimore will be required over 24 weeks. Contact Cathleen Weadon at weadon@kennedykrieger.org 443-923-9140.

For individuals with Down syndrome aged 18-30. This study (BP25543) will look at a drug that is being developed to improve attention and memory. Individuals will take a drug during the 16 weeks of the study, and come to the clinic for tests and keep a journal of side effects, etc. Contact Carrie Blout for info 410-502-7535.
